TERMS TO KNOW:

Community: a place where people live, work, and play
Population:  the number of people living in a community
Transportation: a way of moving people and things from one place to another
Talk about the way people live today and how it is different from long ago in terms of buildings, jobs, transportation, and population.
Examples:
  • sod house, log house, skyscrapers
  • technology
  • horse and buggy, airplanes
  • some communities get smaller as people move away and buildings are left empty
New inventions lead to changes in communities over time.
Examples:
candles -------- electricity trains ---------- airplanes
horse ------------ car typewriter ---------computer
fire for cooking ------ microwave bus ---------subway
 
The responsibilities of a good citizen are:
  • respecting and protecting the rights and property of others
  • taking part in the voting process when making classroom decisions
  • describing actions that can improve the school and community
  • demonstrating self-discipline and self-reliance
  • practicing honesty and trustworthiness
