Brookville Middle School
Choral Department Information Sheet
2012-2013
Information and Grading Requirements
Chorus classes are open to all middle school students regardless
of grade level and/or musical background.
DESCRIPTION OF CHORAL ENSEMBLES
·Chorus 6 - At the Sixth grade level students will be instructed in beginning music reading activities to help them better
follow a piece of choral music, as well as lessons in music history and appreciation in order to become better musicians. Students will also learn proper
choral performance skills, discipline and etiquette.
There will be 3 required performances during the year.
(see attached calendar)
·Chorus 7/8 -An intermediate level class which continues the study
of music reading/theory, and appreciation. With vocal
changes taking place during these years, it is important
to keep the student singing through the changes.
Performance music is chosen to accommodate the variety of vocal levels and interests of the students. There will be 4 required performances during the year.
(see attached calendar)
CONCERT ATTIRE
ALL CHORUS STUDENTS will be required to wear
an assigned school-owned top and personal black pants for performances. More specific information concerning this will be sent home at a later date.

Class Requirements
I
Daily Participation
10 points per day
Students are not graded on their vocal skill but the effort they put forth. If a student chooses not to sing, outside of illness, or refuse to complete written work, points will be deducted. Students must
be on task during the time class has begun until rehearsal has ended. Paying attention with
focus on directions, following those directions and singing is important to the success of the
final performances.
II
Music Appreciation/Theory lessons
Lessons in music theory(reading of music) and appreciation are for musical growth and literacy. Application is individual which is why the quizzes are not weighted so heavily. The total number of quizzes given each six weeks will become an average equal to 2 test grades.
III
Performances
All performances are required as part of the choral classroom’s overall objective.
Calendar dates are set at the beginning of the year and changes are made only if absolutely
and based on other school activities that may cause a major conflict.
Final Assessment
Daily Participation + Quiz Average(= 2 test grades) + Performance
(if one takes place during a marking period) = Final Grade
Make-up Work
Make-up work for missing class work or a concert, or to help daily class participation:
- a music report can be turned in before the end of a six weeks grading period.
- attend musical performances outside of school(e.g. concerts, plays, ) and turn in
a critical review of that performance
