Brookville Choral Music
Information Sheet for Middle School Choral groups
Chorus classes are open to all middle school students regardless
of grade level and/or musical background.
DESCRIPTION OF CHORAL ENSEMBLES
? Beginning Chorus - students are assigned to this level of Chorus if they are a first time singer at BMS, or if they have been assigned by the director based on their past performance skill level. Students will be instructed in beginning music reading activities to help them better follow a piece of choral music, as well as lessons in music history and appreciation in order to become better musicians. Students will also learn proper choral performance skills, discipline and etiquette. There will be 3 required performances during the year.
(see attached calendar)
? Intermediate Chorus -students are assigned to this level group by the director based on their past performance skill level, no matter what grade they are entering having taken Chorus at BMS for at least one year. Expectations for these students will be higher which will be reflected in the grading of their daily participation. Students will be continue the instruction of music reading/theory, and appreciation. With vocal changes taking place during these years, it is important to keep the student singing through the changes. Performance music is chosen to accommodate the variety of vocal levels and advanced abilities of the students. There will be 4 required performances during the year. (see attached calendar)
- all students are responsible for providing black pants
to be worn with a school owned top/shirt that will be
assigned to them.
- Boys are responsible for providing their own black pants to go with a school-owned shirt that will be assigned to them. Girls will be assigned black skirts and white tops.
All students MUST WEAR APPROPRIATE BLACK DRESS SHOES IN CONCERT!
100 points per week = 1 TEST grade
Students are not graded on their vocal skill but the effort they put forth. If a student chooses not to sing, outside of illness, or refuse to complete written work, points will be deducted. Students must be on task during the time class has begun until rehearsal has ended. Paying attention with focus on directions, following those directions and singing is important to the success of the final performances.
Written Music Appreciation/Theory lessons
Tests = 100 points
Lessons in music theory(reading of music) and appreciation are for musical growth and
literacy. This will take place during a warm-up time each day at the beginning of class.
There will be an average of 4 tests per Nine week grading period.
1 performance = 1 Test grade
Performances are required as part of the choral classroom’s overall objective. Calendar dates have already been set as part of the overall school calendar and changes are made only if absolutely necessary, based on other school activities that may cause a major conflict.
Students are responsible for making up any missed tests and performances. A Concert grade can be made up with a written musical topic report. Students are encouraged to attend musical events outside of school and they can turn in programs from the event to earn points that will be added to their final grade.
