Campbell County currently has one full-time and five part-time teachers serving the ESL (English as a
Second Language) population. The teacher assignments are annually reviewed to meet the needs of ESL
students’ location in the various geographic attendance areas of the county. Eligible students for this
program are those individuals who were not born in the United States, or whose native language is a
language other than English, or individuals who come from environments where a language other than
English is dominant. The WIDA (World Class Instructional Design and Assessment) ACCESS for ELLs is
the language proficiency assessment given annually to students in the Kindergarten through the 12th
grade to monitor students’ English language proficiency. Each screening assesses the four language
domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The W-APT is a placement screening that is given to
incoming Campbell County students that have been identified as an English language learner to assist in
the identification and placement of the students within the ESL instructional program. The teachers work
in a resource setting to increase the English language proficiency and academic achievement in the core
content areas for LEP (Limited English Proficient) students. Such instruction also helps them adjust
culturally to life in America. Efforts are made to develop in the students and staff of the school, an
understanding and appreciation of the linguistic and cultural diversity of the student body. LEP students
are encouraged to share their heritage and culture. Through shared experiences, all students
learn. “International Night” is held for LEP students and their families during which a dinner is served,
featuring native dishes from all of the represented countries. Teachers have students’ art and academic
work on display and share a brief overview of their program. Administrators, students, families and
teachers have an opportunity to socialize and become better acquainted during this evening.
